CONSUMERS SOOTHE FEARS OF WAR BY INVESTING IN THEIR HOMES

Consumer surveys indicate that Americans are redirecting resources that might have been allocated to travel to increasing the comforts of their homes. Surveys by Plunkett Research, Houston, reveal home buyers are a major factor at retail stores, purchasing vast quantities of home decor items.

Business Week reports 30-year fixed mortgage rates lingering below 6%, prompting a rise in home sales. As a result, 68.3% of households own their own homes.

The shelter magazine industry is eager to cater to this consumer. According to the Dallas Business Journal, shelter magazines are one of the few bright spots in print advertising, reflecting the nation's heightened interest in nesting in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Cassandra Black, co-owner of EthnicHomeDecor.com, an online retailer of soft home furnishings with ethnic themes, says she has certainly been a staple at Home Depot the last few weekends.

"I've turned off the news and refocused on home. Recently, I made a mudcloth footstool, which will become part of our line of products, built a brick walking path in the yard and rediscovered gardening," she shares.

Experts believe a tragedy like war forces people to take a closer look at their lives to determine what's really important. Ms. Black concurs, adding, "I know I have, and it's my family and my home."

Yuwanda & Cassandra Black are the owners of EthnicHomeDecor.com. Ethnic Home Decor offers soft home furnishings with ethnic themes at affordable prices. For more information or to schedule an interview, send email to media@EthnicHomeDecor.com.
